Promet Source worked with Waubonsee Community College to transform the usability and functionality of mywcc to create an integrated, easy-to-navigate web platform that streamlined the process by which students, faculty, staff, and others accessed information and resources.

About the project

The original mywcc had been built on a home-grown platform.

Challenges within the previous site included:

  • A lack of mobile responsiveness,
  • A system of outdated applets that contributed to suboptimal navigation and difficulties in finding needed information and resources,
  • Inefficiencies caused by student calls to administration office for help in navigating the site, and
  • Lack of integration between the main college website and the mywcc portal.

In the process of rebuilding and integrating the mywcc platform with waubonsee.edu, Promet Source strategically leveraged several Drupal modules, as well as the the existing Drupal theme, while customizing specific capabilities.

Among the college's previous communications challenges was the fact that many students did not realize that they had a college email account, and among those who did, email was often not checked on a regular basis. The new mywcc leverages Drupal Google API module, allowing for previews from students' five most recent emails to appear on and be clickable from their mywcc home page.

Student adoption of the new mywcc is being fueled by factors that include mobile responsiveness, which allows for the same features and functionality for both the mobile and desktop versions of the site. Another major improvement in the new mywcc is a Resources page that’s designed to fast-track student adoption of the site by providing quick access to high-demand information, along with an enhanced search capability that streamlines access to needed information.

With the combined capabilities of the new mywcc, the college has achieved the full scope of priorities and expectations for a communications platform that students and stakeholders found easy to use and was fully integrated as a top-of-mind, go-to resource for conducting college business and staying informed with updates and essential information.

Why Drupal was chosen

Rebuilding the mywcc web platform on Drupal 8 allowed for mobile responsiveness along with a wide range of benefits resulting from integration with the existing Waubonsee Community College website.

Why these modules/theme/distribution were chosen

The Drupal SimpleSAMLphp module enables students and all users to log on to mywcc using their existing account number and log-in.

Drupal’s Google email API module, shows clickable previews from students’ five most recent emails on their mywcc homepage.

Promet’s custom-built Audiences module, implemented through Drupal Taxonomy, directs specific content items to specific user groups, such as students, faculty, staff, trustees, and parents, based on the users’ log-in information.
