Organizations Involved

Starting with a Discovery Workshop, development partners Promet Source and Paramount Solutions collaborated with the Southern District of New York to clarify the full scope of objectives associated with transforming the SDNY's entire web presence from that of a difficult to maintain, home-grown site into a visually engaging framework that identified persona user groups and provided them a path to more easily navigate the site for their distinct needs.

In addition to a more streamlined user experience, the new site needed to be easy to maintain, allowing for non-technical content editors and contributors with varying permission levels, to update and add to the site as needed.  Drupal 8 was selected as the ideal content management system to achieve the full range of client objectives.

About the project

The Southern District of New York's previous website was built on a home-grown CMS that did not provide a straightforward solution for non-technical content editors to make updates. The SDNY was looking for a site that was easy to maintain, and allowed for varying permission levels for updating and adding to the site. The redesigned site also needed to be more engaging, with imagery and branding that conveyed the dignity and prestige of the court's history.

Experience working with the federal government, large stakeholder groups, enterprise-size websites and necessary security clearances proved essential in facilitating a productive engagement that led to the strategy, design, and development of the court’s new website. Solutions for the new site included:

  • A refined menu system designed to serve primary user groups while streamlining navigation,
  • A new design language providing a closer connection to the court’s heritage and the diversity of the people it serves,
  • A redesigned UI and templated page system providing an engaging layout that prioritizes key information,
  • A consistent organization structure and taxonomy system for the site and its documents enabling users to more easily find needed information, and
  • The development of content types which enabled reuse of content, while simplifying content editing and allowing for greater consistency.

In 2019, the Southern District of New York website was awarded a 26th Annual Communicator Award of Distinction.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal 8 was selected as the optimal solution for developing a streamlined navigation experience within a highly complex arrangement of content, data, and resources that multiple persona groups with diverse needs needed to access. The Drupal 8 CMS enabled content from the previous SDNY site to be easily migrated, offering a persona-based categorization of site content for users, and the creation of multiple pathways for accessing information by identifying and drilling down into relevant needs. Now jurors, attorneys, and individuals seeking much-needed forms and resources can filter and refine to easily identify and find resources.
