Sector(s)
A basic intranet consisting of a few web pages accompanied the initial launch of Martin County’s Drupal site. In the absence of a robust internet presence, it was not uncommon for the county’s employees to receive three to four internal emails a day.
Focused on streamlining communication and creating an easily searchable repository of documents and information, Martin County reached out to Promet Source to create a central, online employee resource.
Martin County's intranet is not accessible to the public. The URL provided is that of the overarching Martin County website, of which the intranet is a part.
About the project
Martin County set out to remedy inefficiencies associated with employees receiving three to four internal emails a day, as well as the lack of functionality associated with the existing intranet, which was not visited regularly or viewed as an easily navigated repository for the full spectrum of information and resources.
The fact that the previous intranet's design was not easily distinguished from the general site also proved to impede adoption of a dedicated, employee-focused resource. Solutions that led to the success of the new site included:
- A unique look and feel, which distinguishes employee-only online outreach as separate from the user experience on the broader county site.
- The ability to post global alerts to all employees, as well as role-specific notifications, which ensures efficient and effective outreach.
- An emergency response framework, which spells out everyone’s role relative to a specific threat – most likely a hurricane. Previously, the process of communicating roles and responsibilities for all 1,100 county employees during a time of impending crisis had been inefficient and the source of some confusion.
- Recordings of the county administrator’s quarterly staff meetings, as well as targeted employee newsletters, are now archived and accessible from the intranet at any point.
- An employee benefits “help” feature provides answers to frequently asked questions, without needing to reach out to HR.
Why Drupal was chosen
The existing site was built on Drupal, and Drupal has proven to be an optimal choice for reasons that include ease in assigning permissions, and ease of updating and troubleshooting.
