Enhancing Design and UX with a Migration to Drupal 8
Northwell Health, one of the country’s largest health systems, worked with Phase2 to transform their digital presence on Drupal 7 with enhanced, consistent design and UX. Now Phase2 is advising Northwell Health on their migration to Drupal 8, which will further empower them to distribute editorial control throughout the large organization while adhering to design guidelines and delivering an exceptional, consistent patient experience.

Flexible, Consistent, and Centralized Brand Management
To maintain their vast and growing digital ecosystem, Northwell requires a centralized architecture that can provide detailed information across multiple practices and facilities while empowering content editors with a streamlined publishing workflow.
Northwell also recognizes the importance of continually investing in digital tools, especially when it comes to integrating new technologies and improving the experience for patients, hence their current migration to Drupal 8.
Phase2 advised Northwell on a strategy for migrating to Drupal 8, offered module suggestions, and contributed code as part of an ongoing consultative engagement.

About the project
Maintaining Brand Consistency and UX Across Platforms.
A component-based Design Standards Initiative based in Pattern Lab was an impetus for moving to Drupal 8 as the markup and setup on D8 allowed for a much cleaner implementation of the Component Based Design.

In the migration to Drupal 8, increased use of the paragraphs module will support Northwell Health’s content editors as they create flexible, consistent designs without the need for developer assistance.

Building for the Future
Drupal 8 is also better suited to meet the microservices needs of the future. As their digital ecosystem grows to incorporate new personalization, analytics, marketing automation, CRM, and other technologies and services, Northwell needs a flexible architecture that’s ready for all of these and more.

Staging the Migration
Using a CDN feature on Acquia Hosting, the Northwell team was able to manage and plan the migration in a staged way as new sections of the site come online. This allows for an iterative migration from D7 and D8.
Mobile First
Being mobile first is an essential feature for any website. Drupal 8 is designed for mobile first and then modified for PC. This results in a cleaner, more usable mobile design which can be easily be converted for any device.

Moving Forward
Northwell has plans to expand their digital capabilities and services even further, while using the digital approach and guidelines introduced by Phase2 to ensure brand consistency across their growing platform. Just recently the Northwell team entered the voice technology space with a new Alexa Skill, Northwell Health, one of the many ways the organization is striving to improve the digital patient experience. With Phase2’s help, Northwell’s migration to Drupal 8 will support future goals and position the health system to integrate with future tools and technology.

Paragraphs Module
Paragraphs allows content editors to structure, edit, and post content without developer assistance.
Lighting Distribution
Coupled with Acquia’s BLT dev tooling, lightning distribution gave a nice jump start to Northwell’s migration.
