Naturalis is the Dutch Biodiversity Center. Through their impressive collection, knowledge and data, they record all life on Earth. This is important, as our future depends on biodiversity. Everything in nature is connected, and balance is vitally important for its continued existence.
In September 2018, the Center closed temporarily due to a major renovation of the building. From this moment, the corporate website became more crucial than ever in terms of communication.
About the project
The platform
With our thoughtful Drupal 8 distribution based on the paragraphs module, we developed a fully-fledged website for (inter)national visitors, including motion and complex transitions.
The website informs visitors about the renovation; in addition, it is the portal to inspiring and informative content about nature. Naturalis online aspires to be thé place for anyone who wants to discover more about nature.
Challenges
The biggest challenge was to realize an MVP within a very short time with the right experience of motion and complex transitions. We used to paragraphs-module to create building-blocks for webpages. Including pre-formatted animation. Little creatures that crawl on your screen. WOW!
Since the Naturalis was closed by the renovation, the website was still open. We want to inspire website-visitors, despite the fact that Naturalis itself is closed. Because a visit to Naturalis museum is an awesome experience!
Motions and complex transitions are build with Lottie-web. An adobe after effects renderer built by Airbnb. The website is also linked to the Converis, a research information system, to synchronize all scientific articles every night. This is done through the Migrations API. And last but not least: Salesforce Marketingcloud is also linked for newsletter subscriptions. Which triggers a marketing automation.
We’ve learned from user research (lab-setting) that a menu item “practical information” had to be added. This was one of the surprising additions to the developed strategy, UX and designs.
Why Drupal was chosen

We choose Drupal as our main platform for building websites and platforms. For us, it is the ultimate solution for open source ultra solid code. Drupal makes it possible to customize - to the last details - which provides us with a perfect balance of flexibility and reusability. Moreover, the Drupal community makes sure the product evolves quickly and thoroughly, making sure speed, safety and reusability are guaranteed.
The deadline to realize the new website was very short: seven weeks, including user research. All the reasons above made the choice for an open-source CSM very easy: Drupal.
