We had created the website of the Herz-Neuro-Zentrum Bodensee in 2013 on Drupal 7 and had operated and maintained it on our servers ever since. As Drupal 7 is heading towards its end-of-life, we have upgraded the website to the very latest form of Drupal: Drupal 9. Upgrading from version 7 is one last big leap that comes with some effort. In the future, updates to the Drupal system will be done in much smaller steps, but continuously.
About the project
Excellent Backend User Experience in Drupal 9:
The advances in terms of user experience (UX) in Drupal 9 are remarkable. Especially with the Media (Library) in the Core, the Moderation Management and the new, tidy Admin Theme Gin.
staff of the HNZB.
Reprogramming of the frontend theme from D7 for D9
The Bootstrap framework, which has been used in this project for years, forms the basis of the newly created theme via the Bootstrap Drupal Base Theme. We used the CSS language extension SASS, as in almost all projects, together with Node.js and Gulp to rebuild the theme efficiently and according to Atomic Design principles.
Transferring content and configurations
The interaction of Drush & Migrate tools is the foundation of any upgrade project. After it is clear what all should and can be migrated from the previous installation, it is possible to start using these tools to transfer this content and also configurations.
Why Drupal was chosen
Not only the website of the clinic must be managed but also internal seminars and further training. Drupal allowed us to model all these events, subscriptions and stakeholders easily.
