Organizations Involved

WWF Spain is part of the WWF network, the largest international independent organisation dedicated to the defence of nature and the environment.

WWF is a non-political, science-based civil society organisation working to conserve and restore biodiversity, the network that underpins all life on Earth; to reduce humanity's ecological footprint; and to ensure the sustainable use of resources to support present and future generations.

They seek to collaborate with those who can aid in resolving the issue. They work in a coordinated manner and in networks with WWF offices worldwide, allowing them to have direct and precise knowledge of nature's status in every corner of the planet.

Their resources come from membership fees, donations, national and European project financing lines, and collaboration agreements with companies from sectors with minimal environmental impact.

They understand the importance of gaining and maintaining the trust of all individuals and entities that have relied on them for environmental conservation—a powerful cause in which everyone believes.

In order to continue with their mission from Spain, they got in contact with Cambrico. Our mission was to migrate from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10, and improve their forms flows so they could increase memberships and donations as a result.

About the project

PROJECT’S GOALS

The primary task requested by WWF was not only about migrating all the current content stored on 4 different sites from Drupal 7 to Drupal 10. They entrusted us with resolving a significant organisational challenge: improve the management and maintenance of four different sites sharing very similar functionality.

Three of the original sites plus a new one recently created are campaign-based and collect signatures according to their different fundraising efforts: Trafico de especies, Actúa, Lucha por tu naturaleza y Crimen Ambiental. Colabora is the one used for the donations and membership. Its main functionality pivots over a smooth integration between Webform and Commerce modules based on the module Commerce Webform Order developed by Cambrico.

Apart from orchestrating a transition that had to be nearly seamless to the user, Cambrico also had to find solutions to fulfill the core objective behind the migration: enhance form conversions, which ultimately should lead to boost both membership subscriptions and donation contributions.

With this ultimate goal in mind, we redesigned the original forms to improve the UX by reducing the number of steps to two, and reduced the fields required so that the user feels less overwhelmed by the process. If users find the flow too complicated, they end up abandoning the membership or the donation altogether.

Another requirement of the project was to send all the data gathered during the membership and donation flows (payment method, UTM parameters, etc) to their CRM. For this integration between Drupal and SugarCRM, Cambrico developed a tailored solution in a custom module.

WHAT BUSINESS PROBLEMS WERE SOLVED?

As we have previously described, before the migration, the organisation had to manage and maintain four websites with the risks and inconveniences that that situation carries out (duplicates, loss of information, waste of time, etc).

Cambrico's recommendation and final solution adopted was to centralise the four different websites under a single system in Drupal 10 that serves as a hub for all the content and resources displayed. This way, WWF would only need to access and maintain one platform to manage all different sites.

By using the Domain module to serve the different forms and campaigns under different domains, everything still looks as if we still were under the previous four different sites.

WHAT WAS THE OUTCOME OF THE PROJECT?

The benefits of centralising everything under just one platform that WWF editors and the whole organisation are already experiencing are:

  • Reduction of maintenance time.
  • Simplification of code.
  • The fact that all the forms, dashboards, CRM reports, etc. are now under one single site makes WWF Spain editorial team and managers more efficient.
  • At resource level, having just one source for all the domains results in a much more consistent and robust system.
  • At hosting level, since everything lives now under a single site, we are increasing WWF savings and improving the system portability (there is only one database now instead of four).
  • Relying on a single custom theme with other four sub-themes makes the branding of the organisation much more consistent.

WHAT MAKES YOUR PROJECT SPECIAL?

What makes this project different is the smooth integration between Webform and Commerce modules so that the user is not under the impression that they are shopping in a store but focused on completing a membership or a donation.

Behind the scenes, what makes this positive experience possible is the contributed module Commerce Webform Order developed by Cambrico. This module integrates Webform with Drupal Commerce, and allows creating orders with the submission data of a Webform via a Webform handler.

Why Drupal was chosen

Although WWF was already using Drupal 7, they decided to continue with Drupal and migrate to Drupal 10 because of the endless possibilities that the CMS offers to customize the administration view and other relevant flows for the internal organisation. This way, non-technical editors will be able to continue creating, modifying and customizing new forms, campaigns, etc.

Drupal has become the perfect system to give WWF editors the autonomy required for their day-to-day without the technical hassle.
