A Dive into the engine room with Website Standards Dashboard

The technical aspects of a web page have a crucial impact on its visibility. The success of digital campaigns and other communication measures is inevitably influenced by the technical framework of a web page. Often, as business grows, there is no capacity to implement universal web standards and ensure that they are adhered to in the long term. Especially large companies have to take responsibility for numerous web applications - and at a certain point, this is an impossible task. This is why Factorial created a tool for Böhringer Ingelheim, a German-based company in the healthcare department that went beyond its original purpose and is now publicly available.

Website Standards Dashboard, or WSD, is a quality assurance tool for web pages. It combines market-leading analysis methods with self-developed customizable tests and offers the possibility to monitor the technical KPI’s of numerous websites at a glance. The tool analyses the web pages in terms of performance, SEO, accessibility as well as security and legal requirements and provides the results in a visualized dashboard.

This dashboard not only shows the current score of the respective KPI and the change from previous test runs but also highlights major technical weak points of the web page and offers direct solutions. The use of Website Standards Dashboard does not require technical knowhow as the identified errors can be directly assigned to the responsible development team throughout a jira integration.

About the project

Staying up to date with latest web standards

Factorial's partner Böhringer Ingelheim is responsible for hundreds of websites in numerous countries. In addition to that the company works with dozens of agencies from various fields, so the challenges rose for the team of Böhringer Ingelheim to continuously stay on track regarding the latest web standards implemented for all of their websites. As a consequence the team aimed to find a toolset that enables monitoring numerous websites with a reduced effort and cost savings, available for non-technical audiences. During the project Factorial  recognized the value this tool brings across, especially in the enterprise business. Therefore the tool is now released as a service to help other companies identifying their technical weak points and increasing their web visibility.

One of the challenges was to bring all the data together and make it easy to understand for the user. The incoming data had to be transformed into visualized results in order to provide a tool to use without technical knowledge. The sometimes complex problems also had to be transferable to a ticket system that would allow the non-technical user to forward the errors to their technical department without loss of information and assign them to solve the problem quickly and easily. Here, the Factorial team found a simple yet efficient solution by implementing a Jira integration to directly create and assign tickets to the development teams.

An all in one dashboard

What came out is a customizable dashboard, providing a bird’s eye view on the technical side of the user’s web pages. It is possible to implement additional test methods that truly meet the individual KPI’s of the user. The tool is continuously improved to stay updated with the latest best practises. With Website Standards Dashboard, the user also can test and analyse multiple web services all at once and compare their results.

Currently, WSD offers an evaluation of the website in terms of performance, SEO, accessibility, reachability as well as security and legal requirements. It is important to mention that the user can customize the dashboard to focus on the individual preferences. Also, the user can contribute to further development of the tool regarding additional functionalities and tests.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupals API-first approach, its flexibility and feature-richness were the biggest plus points why we chose drupal for our backend. Drupal is the heart of Website Standards Dashboard, it collects all test-data, processes it, and provides aggregated results via JSON-API for a feature rich frontend application.
