 1MIO Acquia Engage Award Winner

In October 2021, the project was selected as a finalist for the Acquia Engage Awards 2021 in the category Regional Excellence: LATAM, with Unicef’s 1MIO project. On the first day of Acquia Engage, we were announced as winners of the category Dreamers: Regional Excellence — LATAM, with the project 1MIO, by Unicef. The Acquia Engage Awards annually recognize organizations that create innovative and high-impact digital experiences worldwide through the Acquia Open Digital Experience Platform (DXP).

 1MIO Case study

UNICEF wanted to positively impact the lives of young people in Brazil between the ages of 14 and 24, especially those in situations of social vulnerability, such as Black and Brown people, Indigenous people, people living in the suburbs, people with disabilities and LGBTQIA+ people. With this in mind, UNICEF coordinated with the private sector, civil society and the International Labor Organization (ILO) to launch the "One Million Opportunities" (1MIO) project.

The project’s goal was to generate one million opportunities for vulnerable Brazilian youth by 2022 following four pillars — facilitating access to quality education, empowering digital inclusion and connectivity, fostering entrepreneurship and protagonism of adolescents and young people, and ensuring access to the world of work through internship, apprenticeship and formal employment opportunities.

 1MIO Case Study

Project Overview

The project aims to generate one million opportunities for training and access to the world of work for adolescents and young people aged 14 to 24 years in situations of social vulnerability by 2022. To meet the client's demand, we created a fast and accessible digital platform to advertise job openings, courses, and content for the target audience and a favorable environment for communication with companies interested in participating in the project.

For this client, our team developed a website in less than 3 months using Drupal in conjunction with Acquia Site Studio platform, which guaranteed us great results in performance, accessibility and usability. We were also responsible for the project’s design.

About the project

Client Requirements

UNICEF envisioned the 1MIO initiative as a way for socially vulnerable adolescents to find skilled employment and professional training affordably. But first, the organization needed to build a platform that connects employers (UNICEF Partner Companies) with young people in vulnerable situations in Brazil. The platform would serve three types of clients (young people, employer partners, and public institutions) and required a modern look and feel, use of social media timelines, matchmaking of opportunities based on profiles, and a dashboard of opportunities. The goal was to increase brand awareness and engagement.

For the 1 MIO project, we received the challenge of developing a Web App, thinking mobile first. Due to the socio-economic limitations of the target audience, we opted for PWA (Progressive Web Application) development technology, which allowed us to offer a large part of the material offline and a website that supports high simultaneous access and does not require a high-speed connection to load quickly.

The Solution

The solution was to create a Web App platform with an idea of an opportunity hub. For this, we used the Acquia platform for its ease of configuration and scalability. We worked with the premise that most of the access would be from cell phones with a low internet signal. Thus, we designed and developed everything thinking in mobile first, with super light content to reach all types of devices with speed and efficiency.

We chose to work in an integrated way with the development team, elaborating a design system that would allow possible changes in styles, because we knew that only after the conclusion of the development we would receive the project's brand with its Brandbook.

In less than 3 months, we delivered the complete project with simplified navigation and editing processes, increasing autonomy in publishing job openings and other content. With a friendly and attractive design, we managed to keep the audience's interest, even when dealing with serious subjects, such as education and work.

The Results

UNICEF now has the opportunity to create one million opportunities for young people, and a unique opportunity to impact millions of lives. The project was delivered in less than three months. And in less than a year, the 1MIO initiative has:

  • Worked with more than 90 partners
  • Reached 6.2 million young people via the platform, social networks and events
  • Generated 50,000 opportunities, including:
    • 10,684 opportunities to access the world of work
    • 11,287 opportunities for access to quality education
    • 22,836 opportunities for training for the world of work
    • 1,000 opportunities for connectivity and digital inclusion

Why Drupal was chosen

To achieve the performance and release date goals of this project, UNICEF and Dexa (former MMDA) relied on Drupal in conjunction with Acquia Site Studio to deliver the best experience for mobile users under poor mobile connection conditions.

This was achieved by using the component based templating of Acquia Site Studio and Drupal community's PWA module. This contributed for a fast development without sacrificing user experience, security and site maintainability.
