Community contributions
Zuerich.com relies on Liip's best practices for building Drupal sites. Layout Builder iFrame Modal was a fundamental module we contributed to as part of building the site.
As part of developing zuerich.com, we have contributed back to Drupal, helping with bugs and features for modules like Config Ignore, Metatag, Rabbit Hole, XML sitemap and Configuration Split.
We also contributed to the Drupal 9 readiness of various modules such as Domain Menu Access and Taxonomy Term Reference Tree Widget.
Zuerich.com is the official guide for Zurich. You find all kinds of information and booking possibilities for restaurants, hotels, tours and places of interest in and around Zurich.
Zurich Tourism is responsible for the destination marketing of the greater area of Zurich. As Zurich's official tourism organisation they provide tourists with easily accessible information. The website is all about services, hotel reservations, city tours, sightseeing, restaurants and so much more the city has to offer.
About the project
The main goal of the project was to migrate the website to Drupal 8/9 and have a secure and maintainable website. As a content-rich site, manual migration was out of the question. Due to the limited resources of the content team, the main part of the migration had to be done automatically. We also took the migration as an opportunity to rethink the structure of the site. The old website had grown historically. That’s why we reconsidered some structures and looked at all the entities. In the end, we were able to simplify and reduce the amount of different taxonomies and content types. We achieved this ideal structure by using an agile project methodology and an iterative approach.
One of the requirements of Zurich Tourismus was to get as much flexibility in the content design without confusing the user. That’s where the Layout Builder module steps in. This modular construction kit enables editors to build complex yet dynamic pages. These are not only technically robust but also visually varied, resulting in great pages due to the range of components. To take advantage of the flexibility and variety of the Layout Builder, we introduced a new content type. The aim of the content type was to enable Zurich Tourism to reuse the content of their print magazines.
In addition, we made some design optimizations. With a new look and feel and a refresh of the overall design, the navigation was simplified and the filter pages have been revised.

Why Drupal was chosen
Zurich Tourism has been using Drupal for several years. They run a content-rich site maintained by multiple editors. Therefore, it was logical to continue the journey with Drupal.
A need of Zurich Tourism was to easily create, manage and deploy multiple sites from one Drupal CMS installation. This requirement was met by Drupal allowing for a non-hierarchical and flexible content structure. For Zurich Tourism, these sites include:
- https://meeting.zuerich.com/en - MICE Tourism
- https://zt.zuerich.com/en - organisation Zuerich Tourism
- https://www.rapperswil-zuerichsee.ch - Rapperswil Tourism
