Community contributions
Terre des Hommes depends on various community projects that we improved during the development of the project by providing feedback in the issue queue and contributing patches on drupal.org. Important modules to be stated:
- Gin and its ecosystem modules for a better editorial experience
- Paragraphs for flexible content layouts
- Rokka module for optimised image handling
As the leading Swiss organisation for children’s aid, created in 1960, the Terre des hommes foundation is committed to protecting children’s lives and their rights, and improving their well-being. They aim to do so through innovative programmes focused on health, migration and access to justice, specially designed to have both short- and long-term impacts. For more than 60 years, they have been working in difficult situations, in countries at war, regions devastated by natural disasters, and places where poverty and malnutrition force millions of children and their families to migrate elsewhere. They provide direct and indirect support to millions of children, their families and communities in around thirty countries every year.
With this beautiful assignment in mind, the former website (launched in 2016 with Drupal 7) was no longer fulfilling Tdh’s needs and reflecting their vision and mission.
Therefore, Tdh was looking for a partner to support them in creating a new website that develops long-lasting relationships with their audience and helps Tdh increase the donation flow through the website.
In addition to the important technical skills, Tdh found a partner in Liip that shares common values in terms of innovation, inclusion and sustainability.
Liip is 100% Swiss and has agile working methods, which also appealed to the organisation.
For this project, Liip supported as a full-service agency from concept to UX/UI, technical implementation and support in analytics, SEO and content writing.
About the project
The former Tdh website, launched in 2016 and built in CMS Drupal 7, reached the end of its life.
Moreover, the former website no longer fully contributed to the Tdh strategy for the upcoming years.
Tdh wants to attract more and younger donors by simplifying online donations and providing an interactive website focusing on mobile use.
Furthermore, the website should build long-lasting relationships with Tdh's partners and supporters and show Tdh’s impact on children's' lives. Their goal was to highlight the voices and experiences of children, giving them a prominent role in our content and storytelling
Once Tdh chose Liip as their partner, we started the UX phase, by conducting user interviews, workshops and defining the (website) strategy.
We formulated this strategy into the current website, incl. design deliverables, SEO, analytics and content support.
Apart from the technical need to upgrade the website, it was also crucial for Tdh to match the website with their future goals.
The former website was hard to maintain content-wise, had too much (and sometimes outdated) information, and didn’t reflect Tdh in terms of who they want to be regarding innovation. Therefore, different goals were defined at the start of this project;
First, the website had to contribute to the image/branding of Tdh positively
As Tdh focuses on children, the entire design, including design elements, hand-drawn icons and illustrations emphasises the children-centric approach.
Secondly, the website should reflect the impact of donations/volunteering work/any support on the lives of the many children in need.
Therefore, we developed interactive elements with easy filters to visualise how users can help via Tdh and simplified the donation flow.
Furthermore, we extended the payment methods for donations with, e.g. Twint (a leading Swiss mobile payment tool) and Apple Pay to simplify this process.
For people to donate time, money or interest, Tdh must be trusted to spend these investments wisely. With the different design elements and streamlined content, the website is easy to navigate. We achieved simple user journeys, simple processes and intuitive navigation.
Why Drupal was chosen
Tdh had experience with Drupal before and wanted to have a CMS with many possibilities in content management with the open source/community behind it.

Key modules/theme/distribution used:
Most of the default Drupal modules provided Tdh with all the needed features.. Furthermore, we used the gin theme as it’s intuitive and easy to use.
The two modules we developed are the integration with Datatrans to handle the payments for the donations, and the CRM with Microsoft Dynamics for the donations and contact requests.
The integration with Microsoft Dynamics allows Tdh to have all user data in one central location.
