Schulthess Klinik is one of the leading orthopaedic clinics in Europe. In late 2018 the clinic underwent a complete renewal of its digital presence by implementing a new branding and an improved user experience. With this new digital strategy Schulthess Klinik is willing to position itself as a clinic of first choice among its primary user groups: patients and referring physicians.

Unic is responsible for the concept, UX design, digital marketing, SEO, digital analytics, content strategy as well as the hosting. The website was implemented on the Web Content Management System Drupal 8.

About the project

With the web relaunch, Schulthess Klinik wanted to position itself even more as one of the leading orthopaedic clinics in Switzerland. The goal was to be the first choice for referring doctors as well as the patients. With the digital strategy, which is intended to support the referrers and patients in the customer journey, the website becomes the central online touchpoint for the clinic's digitally accessible service offering over several phases.

Targets of the project *

  • Rebranding- new look and feel
  • New concept of accessing the relevant information and webforms. Target-oriented for doctors and patients.
    • In the long term, the referring doctor should become a digitally connected partner in the treatment process.
    • Increase efficiency of the referrer through a better usability on the website.
    • In the long term, the patient should be supported and accompanied appropriately in the treatment process.
    • The website's digital service offering will be constantly expanded.
  • Increase the knowledge of patients and referring physicians about the treatment process at the Schulthess Klinic.
  • Mediation of the research focuses and research results to different target groups.
  • Increase the awareness of the Schulthess Clinic in the population.
  • Innovations in data protection.
  • Very short timeline for the relaunch with a fixed deadline.

Results of the project *

  • Presentation of the new corporate design on the web
  • Simplification and conversion of the information architecture and the navigation concept (better user oriented)
  • Better user guidance through a better structure of the content (especially through weighting of content elements at the content level)
  • Simple user guidance through user-centered content.
  • Clearly visible calls-to- action.
  • Provide easy access to digital services for referrers and patients (less clicks to the final step).
  • New allocation of individual content (especially research content).
  • Provision of information for future digital services (referring wizards, EPD and so on).
  • Possible first step towards the Digital First approach in publishing. Stories will be primarily prepared for the web.
  • Replacement of the Content Management System Mura through Drupal.
  • Throughout the development process the project team pursued a consistently user-centered approach. This included workshops with referrers and patients to ensure that the website is logically structured from the user's point of view

Technical challenges of the project *

  • Very short timeline with a fixed deployment date and budget.
  • We had to implement a complex datamodel with a lot of referenced content. This required a lot of custom paragraph types.
  • The assigned forms are complex and contain a lot of business logic. Each medical field can have a different set of fields and options that need to be filled out.
  • We had to implement 2 different searches based on Apache Solr. This also required the design and concept of 2 different indexes.
  • One requirement was the integration of an external secure mail - API (Hin-Mail). This allowed Drupal to send mails through a gateway that guarantees encryption of all mails inside the schulthess mail infrastructure.

Why Drupal was chosen

  • Open source and modern technology stack
  • Multilingual
  • High adaptability of the framework
  • Drupal has a lot out-of-the box content management functionalities that deliver most of the needed requirements.
  • Drupal core is easy to extend it with new modules and to integrate it with other services.
