The Museum of Science, Boston is a beloved local institution that engages nearly five million people per year in its physical space at Science Park and in museums around the world, in classrooms, and online. But like many other educational and cultural institutions, it faced challenges connecting with its audiences in physical spaces due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Museum asked Velir to create an interactive, virtual home for its Project Vaccine exhibit.
About the project
Project Vaccine is a timely exhibit that showcases the science and people behind vaccine development. It was conceived as a physical exhibit with a minimal digital footprint. However, given the persistence of COVID-19, attracting visitors to the museum was challenging. Also, the science and information surrounding specific COVID-19 vaccines rapidly changed as new information emerged about the virus.
The Museum of Science, Boston’s Project Vaccine challenges/goals included:
- Reduced visitation to the Project Vaccine physical exhibit due to COVID-19
- Rapidly changing science and information specific to the exhibit
- Present content to multiple audiences / different languages using Drupal's multilingual capabilities
- Utilize Storybook and ReactJS for reusable components portfolio-wide
- Support freeform component entry through Paragraphs wired to ReactJS
- Ability to enter and disseminate new content quickly and with ease to support visitors to the museum and website on COVID-19
Why Drupal was chosen
The Museum of Science has ran their websites on Drupal for over a decade. Drupal was and is continued to be relied on for its strong content management ability and ease of extending and customizing to fit user and business case needs. Although the current site is still running strong on version 7, it will be on the latest version in another phase of the project to meet more modern needs. In the interim, we relied on the current install to get the exhibit information and info-graphics up and out as soon as possible with the rapidly changing day to day information to serve the public need across a variety of device and publishing mediums.
