Visit the site
Visit the siteOur tribute to those Lowestoft people who died because of two World Wars. It is THE MOST complete record (we think), and includes photos, dates, places and memories. It is fully searchable.
Using Drupal 9 with its views and map integration has enabled us to build a resource that we are really proud of and is now to be featured in a British Library project and in a national BBC magazine
About the project
The goal was initially to pull together all the incomplete and sometimes contradictory lists of local casualties, check them against primary sources and then import into an online site that could be easily used by members of the public. We also needed a simple way of the community contributing old photographs and memories to the site, we did this via a customised email url on each record that contained the edit url and the persons full name. When we received the photo it was a simple matter of saving the image and then using the edit link to add with a credit. Thanks to this we now have over 400 photos.
The our one is an online resource that has captured schools imagination and may be used as a template for other projects.
Why Drupal was chosen
It’s power to make connections between content. For example each record has a date of death and a street address, this enables blocks - “also died on this day” and “Also from this street”.

Address/Geolocation enabled us to import the addresses and have them turned into Lat lon coordinates, this enabled us to create maps showing how each street was affected eg

takes a while to load (so many casualties sadly)
