Iteris is a global leader in applied informatics, making innovative sensors and systems that improve traffic safety, efficiency, and mobility, and ensure agricultural sustainability by providing data related to soil conditions, growth models, weather, and location details.

As part of a complete rebrand, Iteris wanted to revamp its website to match its new messaging, design styles, and logo. Iteris came to WebEnertia to overhaul the website visually while maintaining the complex backend access permissions for various types of users.

About the project

The challenge was to redesign the Iteris website to give it a fresh feel while maintaining established access permissions for various sections and users. And we needed to do it without requiring users to update their application, whether they’re on iOS or Android. We also wanted to make it easy for Iteris to add new pages or edit existing pages without outside help.

We started out designing various website sections as blades using the Paragraphs module. This allows an Iteris site editor to assemble new pages in differing variations but with consistency in the overarching look and feel so the company can keep up with its ever-changing content needs.

The Resource Center is a key part of the Iteris website, and uses custom code to show users content tailored to their persona when they’re logged in. Iteris customers use its products for a wide range of applications, from state and federal governments and local agencies looking to streamline and safeguard traffic, to agricultural retailers and providers leveraging digital farming solutions to protect food safety and sustainable practices. With Drupal, we were able to write hooks that let Iteris edit who has access to various resources so it can better use the content it already has while giving the visitor a more personalized experience.

WebEnertia recreated the Resource Center API in Drupal to maintain the existing Iteris access permissions and ensure that no user update would be required. We then imported the existing resources and user base, maintaining the API endpoints while rebuilding everything in Drupal.

By using core Drupal functionality, we enabled two types of blogs for Iteris’s target markets, traffic and agriculture, with rich social messaging enabled by Disqus. Even with only a few contributing modules, we were able to build a robust, dynamic site that delivers a superior experience for Iteris customers.

The new Iteris website embodies the company’s updated image while also allowing a customized user experience based on individual needs and interests. Thanks to Drupal’s easy to use blades and fine-grained permissions, Iteris can continually update and evolve the website for first-time visitors and returning customers alike. As a highly specialized technology leader, this is crucial to staying at the forefront of the field.

Why Drupal was chosen

WebEnertia chose Drupal for this project because the fine-grained functionality needed for rich user resource permissions and the ability to power both iOS and Android apps on the backend is built in. Drupal modules also provide the flexibility to allow Iteris to easily evolve its website to meet future needs.

Key modules/theme/distribution used:

Why these modules/theme/distribution were chosen

We chose the Paragraphs module to enable simple assembly of new web pages by in-house staff using pre-designed blades so Iteris can keep its website and content fresh for users, while delivering a consistent branded feel without requiring programming resources.

The Field_group module was used to group various fields so that it is easy for the site editor to add, edit, and update content. The Scheduler module was used to publish blogs and news at a certain time of the day.
