Project Team

On our weekly internal training sessions we focused on Drupal 8. This way not only the 2 involved developers had to solve the issues, but the whole BRAINSUM team was there to help and to learn at the same time.

We are sharing details of the project in blog posts and we also published a presentation .

Last year in Amsterdam at the DrupalCon, after the first official Drupal 8 beta release we (BRAINSUM) were sitting enthusiastically and felt that the time has come to offer Drupal 8 to a client.
Not for a complex system though, just for a nice, responsive corporate website.
After the client was selected carefully we created the graphical designs and we started to build the site in February on Drupal 8 beta6. The new www.gravityrd.jp went live in 2 months, on 10th of April.

  • Gravity Research & Development is known by its recommendation engine. They are an innovative IT service company so choosing an innovative platform for their new website is a good fit.
  • BRAINSUM is a Drupal focused web design and development agency. We are building Drupal sites and web application since Drupal 4.7 and we love innovation.

About the project

The scope of the new site was very limited: a one page site with a couple of additional simple subpages but by the end this had changed a lot. We tried to be really agile and accepted the client's concept of navigation which is fundamentally different than the default Drupal behaviour. Instead of navigating to simple subpages ("node pages") we ended up with subpages containing multiple nodes grouped differently with custom tab navigations. We had to redirect all node view pages to the corresponding custom page and even activate the right tab. We had to develop custom modules to achieve this but Drupal 8 has proven it's felxibility and in just 2 months the site went live.

Why Drupal was chosen

The previous gravityrd.com was built with Drupal 7 so Drupal was a strong candidate for the redesigned new site. At the end Drupal 8 was convincing as a future-proof platform and won against Wordpress and Drupal 7.

Why these modules/theme/distribution were chosen

The Gratis theme was available for Drupal 8 beta6 as a modern responsive theme. We benefited much from it's support for sub-theming with Grunt and LibSass + Live reload.
