The European Training Foundation (ETF) is the EU agency supporting countries surrounding the European Union to reform their education, training and labour market systems. EWORX partnered with the ETF in 2016 in order to develop a website, completely overhauling the existing website. This new website would enhance the way in which visitors interact with the site, its content and increase the outreach of the ETF’s communication and dissemination efforts.

About the project

The ETF was aiming to boost its brand, so it was essential to develop a modern and attractive platform, while addressing usability issues of the previous website. The main project objectives were:

  • Complete redesign of the website’s information architecture, structure and look & feel
  • Improve the website’s performance on all users’ screens (including mobiles), on search engines, and simultaneously offer a more reliable and secure online service
  • Introduce automations, workflows and integrations with internal and external systems to minimise the content management effort and enable team members to focus on more productive and creative tasks
  • Improve the website’s usability and IA, offering users an improved experience and empowering them to discover and retrieve content more effectively.

The above objectives had to be implemented with usability, accessibility, and performance in mind, as well as providing a modern, stable, and scalable development platform for further improvements and new features.

The project included the migration of content and files from ETF’s previous content management system. Therefore, the structure of the previous system’s database and file system needed to be considered. Mapping of old content to the new website and custom scripts needed to be written for the processing of both content and files.

Another goal was to make ETF content editors true owners of content. The new Drupal 8 site, allows content editors to change content on the site, with workflow and integrations that ensure editorial integrity and efficiency. The new site is fully under ETF’s control, which enables ETF to be more in line with and responsive to its stakeholders’ needs.

Our work enabled the ETF to achieve the maximun scope of priorities and expectations for a communication and dissemination platform while boosting its image and brand. With the new site, we have empowered the ETF to better serve the long-term needs of internal and external stakeholders for years to come. The new ETF website has helped the organization take full control of their system and ownership of their data, with a fully integrated management system resulting in an exceptional experience for our client and the end users. .

Why Drupal was chosen

ETF’s previous content management system was not Drupal and the new ETF website had to be developed on a robust platform to facilitate complicated data structure and integrations with multiple external applications (e.g. ETF’s Active Directory, Events Management System, Jobs Management System, SharePoint), therefore Drupal 8 was an ideal solution. Moreover, it was imperative for the CMS to have multilingual support capabilities, enabling translation of the site into various languages, which Drupal 8 also facilitated. Its high extensibility via API’s was an essential component that allowed enhancement and integration with all steps of the customer journey, making it the best content management system choice. Last but not least, Drupal was chosen because of its profound community support, its regular security updates, and its proven flexibility to easily add content and functionalities.
