The Australian Immunisation Handbook provides clinical advice to health professionals on the safest and most effective use of vaccines in their practice. The Handbook contains information for all vaccines that are available in Australia.

Originally a printed publication, the handbook guided health professionals in the safe and effective use of vaccines and managing children's immunisations. With regular updates to the 500+ page Handbook, the printed version fast became out-of-date; and as a result health professionals found it difficult to keep track of the most current information.

Moving the Handbook online made sense, providing the resource now in an easy to update format; and providing access either from the office, or out on the field via mobile or tablet. Utilising the extra functionality that the web offers, the project provided the opportunity to also deliver  a 'catch-up calculator' which provides a useful tool for health professionals to easily navigate and determine the correct immunisation regime for their child patients.

Morpht was commissioned to develop the Australian Immunisation Handbook into a website, produce a native app as well as creation of a 'catch-up calculator'.

About the project

All medical practitioners now have access to a centralised digital resource of up-to-date immunisation information and protocols. With access to a set of integrated set of tools in the shape of a responsive website, a native app and a supporting Catch-up Calculator Web app, practitioners have all the latest and most accurate information they need at their fingertips.

The Catch-up Calculator

The Catch-up Calculator is an invaluable tool designed to help medical practitioners manage a child's immunisation regime. We built this a standalone Web App using Drupal concepts to structure data in Javascript libraries. The app records a child’s age and immunisation history, processes complex business logic and produces recommendations for vaccines appropriate to the child's age and immunisation history. The recommendations can then be saved as a PDF to be shared with the parents/guardians or saved by the medical practitioner.

Why Drupal was chosen

Drupal was chosen for this project as it offered its strong UX framework with the capacity to inter-relate content types for 24 diseases, 11 related antigens, and 61 related vaccines. The site utilises live XML feeds to support a native web app.
